Last week, MoveOn PAC members gave over $2.1 million to launch Leave No Voter Behind: MoveOn PAC's Neighbor-to-Neighbor Victory Drive to turn out 440,000 additional votes for Kerry from 10,000 targeted neighborhoods. We're bowled over by this level of enthusiasm, but to make it work, we'll also need tens of thousands of volunteer leaders like you.

Just because you don't live in one of the 'swing' states doesn't mean you have to sit this election out. We're looking for 10,000 people to adopt a key battleground state voting district, or 'precinct'. These volunteers will partner with local residents in that precinct to contact a few hundred voters, educate them on the issues and the candidates, and turn them out to vote. The Goal: 40 or more additional votes for Kerry per precinct, enough to tip the balance in this close a race. Using new online tools plus coordinated road trips and phone calling, we will help you focus your energy where it matters the most.

I'm interrupting John Kerry's dispatches from the road to tell you about something that will make you angry, but which is important for you to hear.

We knew it was coming: the Bush campaign and several allied right-wing groups are using August to launch a vicious smear attack against John Kerry. They think we're vulnerable this month because while George Bush is still able to raise money for attack ads, Kerry had to stop fundraising at the Democratic convention last week. They're taking this opportunity to go for the jugular.

The worst of the current wave of attacks is coming from a Republican-funded group called "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth." (I'll call them by a more accurate name: Swift Boat Veterans for Bush.) The group is led by a longtime Republican operative and financed by GOP contributors with strong ties to George Bush. Its function in the overall Republican strategy is this: tear down John Kerry since Bush has no record or vision to run on.

The swift boat ad is full of lies. Thirteen men who never served with John Kerry lie about knowing him and viciously attack his record. It is a new low for the Republicans.

Every time they have attacked us like this, it has only made us stronger. When they ran dishonest attack ads (like the unbelievable new one on the air right now), thousands of new supporters flocked to our campaign to give us the resources we need to fight back on the airwaves.

Now that the general election has begun, they're hoping things are different. They're going to be sorely disappointed because we are not alone. The Democratic National Committee is well prepared to take on this fight.

And therefore I'm asking you: everything you did for our campaign, please do now for our Democratic Party. Give the party the resources it needs to fight against these right-wing attacks:

Never before have so many world-famous musicians come together to shift the balance in an election. But these artists created the Vote for Change tour because they feel that this is the most important election in our nation's history. Bent on putting polluter profits ahead of public health, the Republicans have refused to force power plants to cut air pollution linked to asthma. Worst of all, they have proposed a plan that would delay and weaken requirements for coal-fired power plants to reduce their emissions of poisonous mercury. Mercury is known to cause birth defects and even learning disabilities and this proposal only serves to put another generation of children at risk. A Democratic majority in the Senate will help put the laws in place that will change the destructive path we are on and steer us toward a more sustainable and healthy environment.

Over the past year, the DSCC has sent over 4.7 million emails, resulting in contributions and actions by almost 15,000 people and over 3,000 new signups to our email list. Who would have guessed? When we asked MoveOn members last month for their stories for a Real People ad campaign, we got hundreds of responses from members -- Republicans, Democrats and Independents -- who voted for George Bush in 2000, but will be voting for Kerry in 2004. These stories of disaffection are the most powerful statements we've found about the failed Bush presidency. We will highlight these personal stories in an ad campaign to be televised during the Republican convention -- and we want to know which ones move you the most.

In the last two weeks, Academy Award-winning documentary film director Errol Morris has been interviewing these former Bush voters on camera, and he's cut seventeen ads that tell their stories. We're running a contest to help us choose the ads that will best convince undecided and swing voters to vote for John Kerry. We'll run them during the Republican convention. Vote now at:

As these ads show, support for George Bush is unraveling, even in his traditional base. We hear every day about more prominent Bush defections, from business leaders to four star generals. At first, the administration tried to silence these voices by launching attacks on people like Richard Clarke, the Bush administration's own counter-terrorism chief. But now there are too many people stepping forward to make that possible. On the same day last week that Bruce Springsteen and dozens of artists announced their Vote for Change tour, Peter Chernin, President and COO of News Corp, which owns Fox News, announced his support for John Kerry.

But the most compelling voices we've heard come from MoveOn members themselves -- Americans from all walks of life deciding that it's time for a change.

I have been struck by the eloquence of ordinary citizens. And I have thought in the context of the 2004 campaign, rather than have pollsters talk to the American people, why not have the American people talk to the American people -- in their own words? Who better to express the current concern with the direction in which America is going? Who better to express the dreams and aspirations of Americans? Who better to express their hopes for change?

Many of us have very strong feelings and beliefs about what has happened in the last four years in our country. But there is also a growing concern with what could happen in the next four years. Is this country heading in the right direction? What is our vision of America? Is it being realized?

MoveOn has pioneered a new kind politics with populist roots. It has allowed Americans to speak directly to other Americans.

This is a very simple idea. A different kind of political advertising. Not a prepared speech. Not a voice-over narrative, but rather Americans speaking one on one. Americans speaking to other Americans in their own words, expressing their beliefs and their hopes for the future.
