Gurley Man

TAKE ACTION: The Original GURLEY MAN Exposed in High Power job at RNC!

Lately, I never know what will happen when I call one of these gays responsible for gay bashing. But much to my surprise, Daniel Gurley, the NUMBER TWO POLITICAL OPERATIVE at the REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE completely confirmed for me on the phone that yes, he's gay. Now, I know some readers have a tough time connecting the guy who manages all the money to the political hate...but could it be any clearer in this case? This man is paid, blogACTIVE readers, to supervise campaigns in the field and what a field day against gays he has been having! Unreal! You can read all about the phone call to Gurley in a well written article by John Byrne at Blue Lemur.

Amazingly, Gurley -- a REAL Gurley man -- joined the RNC in the dual roles of Deputy Political Director and National Field Director. Here's what the entry said at Dan's fraternity Alumni notes section:
Dan Gurley ’94 is the national field director for the Republican National Committee for the 2004 election cycle. He filled the number two political position at the RNC, assisting the re-election efforts of the Bush-Cheney ticket, along with targeted United States Senate, United States House and Governor races across the country.
Lucky for Dan, the undergraduates of his fraternity approved a clause protecting members based on their sexual orientation. Too bad his current employer has no such policy!

TAKE ACTION:

If you're as amazingly shocked as I am, take a moment, Click here and write to DAN GURLEY, JAY BANNING and others at the RNC and tell them how you feel about gay bashing. Ask Dan Gurley how he can sleep at night knowing that he is one of the people responsible for the anti-gay attacks being thrown by his party!!. A copy of your letter will be sent to a bunch of folks at the RNC who should be educated about their hateful campaigns.

These are GAY people BASHING GAY PEOPLE to grab power! Please speak up today!

Gurley Admits: Yes that was my Gay.com Screenname

Just hours after deleting his Gay.com profile, RNC National Field Director Daniel Gurley admited to Raw Story that DGCapitol was his handle on the male dating service and then tried to claim his name had been reused by someone else.

Nice try Dan....you're a liar! --

Here is the profile DAN GURLEY LIED to the press about. Here is the Profile Dan Gurley pulled down TODAY:

RNC Senior Staffer Seeks Others for Unsafe Sex! (Updated)

Dan Gurley
RNC National Field Director & Deputy Political Director

Apparently, some of the staff over at the Republican National Committee are not clear about President Bush’s abstinence before marriage program, or at least that’s what I discovered tonight over at www.gay.com. I was chatting over the Washington, DC chat room when I realized that Dan Gurley, the National Field Director of the RNC was in the same chat room I was in.

On November 5th -- just days after the election -- the Christian Science Monitor reported that:
Coming off an election in which many voters cited "morals" as a top concern, Bush may use that mandate to promote responsible fatherhood, abstinence-only sex education, and "healthy marriages" in the reauthorization of welfare reform.

Bush made campaign pledges to
triple federal funds for abstinence programs
in schools and community-based programs. (emphasis added)
blogACTIVE readers may recall my story of September 27th when I exposed the number two political operative of the RNC as a gay man. Here, in the midst of one of his party’s most homophobic campaigns, Dan Gurley was serving at the National Field Director of it all.

And now, in a slap in the face of the moral values wing of the party, this evening I discovered Mr. Gurley seeking unsafe sex with multiple partners, outside of his relationship. Apparently, the new rules of abstinence before marriage don’t apply to senior staff of the Republican Party. These people are PATHETIC!

When I was researching the original story on Dan Gurley I read a post about his RNC appointment which included his AOL emails (and thus instant messenger name). Because I wanted to give Mr. Gurley a chance to respond to my story, I added his AOL name, DGCapitol, to my AOL instant messenger list. Imagine my surprise when earlier tonight I saw someone with the same screenname in the gay.com chatroom!

For those of you unfamiliar with the abbreviations in the Chat Bio Line, above, this profile explains that the person lives on Capitol Hill, has pictures and his stats listed in his online profile (you can see the entire profile here.) Dan is looking to host others at his home. "bb" is the abbreviation for "barebacking" which is the term used by gay men who wish to engage in anal intercourse without a condom. R/t means "real time," or that the person is looking to meet in person. The line ends with the request to only send a private message if you have a picture to share.

UPDATE: Folks have asked me, "what is that graphic I am looking at?" When a user enters the gay.com chat room, a list of users is displayed. when you highlight one of the names, in this case, DGCapitol, the small picture appears along with a one line description which in this case is exaplained above.
Here are some other entries from Dan's profile:

Relationship status: an open relationship - Is this the family values bullshit that Mr. Gurley shoved down the nation's throat as NATIONAL FIELD DIRECTOR during the recent election campaign?

Politics: Lean right - Um, Dan, in case you did not notice, "way right" was also a choice here. Don't you think that it's more applicable to you and your day job?

Dan has this selection of photos on line:

Here's some of what visitors to gay.com see in Dan's "Adult" profile:
Now, for a quick peek under the cover...
Endowment/Dimensions:
Above average, 8+ cut (not an internet 8, either)
I prefer to be:
Switch/Versatile, I'll be whatever you want me to be!
I like to have sex...:
3-5 times a week, I'm usually ready...and available
Body Hair:
Arms, Chest, Pits, Tummy, Legs, I shave occasionally, all over
In my own words:
Just looking for good sex, whether with one or several. Always versatile and love to fool around. Race is not a factor, just be purportional [sic] and bring some personality with you.
Things I'm into: Anal sex, Body contact, Groups, Kissing, One-on-one, Oral sex, Porn
With all of these right wingers in DC running around looking for bareback sex with multiple partners, you think they would start some kind of club: Paging Andrew Sullivan...Andrew Sullivan, please call the RNC Political Office.

National Field Director for Republican Party sought unsafe sex, multiple partners online; Admits to profile but can’t recall content

By John Byrne | RAW STORY Editor

The National Field Director and deputy political director for the Republican National Committee Daniel Gurley solicited unprotected sex and multiple sex partners in an online profile at Gay.com, in seeming contradiction with the Party’s call for abstinence and positions on gay issues.

His adult chat profile soliciting men for unprotected sex and said he has sex three to five times weekly was discovered yesterday by activist Michael Rogers of blogACTIVE.com.

Gurley admitted to RAW STORY Tuesday he had a profile in his America Online screenname.

That screenname is the same name which appeared in his Gay.com profile yesterday, which was deleted early this morning.

Gurley said he deleted his profile around the time RAW STORY ran an interview with him Sept. 27. He suggested that someone might have re-registered under his name.

Gay.com, however, disagreed. Public relations directed an inquiry to a customer service representative who said that would not be possible.

“We don’t allow screennames to be reused,” she said.

His public profile states that he is seeking “action/sex,” is in an “open relationship” and that his partner and himself “enjoy playing together when we can.” His private adult profile is more direct, soliciting unsafe sex and detailing more personal information.

Asked if he remembered soliciting unprotected sex, Gurley said, “I don’t remember specifics.” He declined to discuss any details of his original profile.

Gurley said that he would not allow gay.com to release their logs which might prove that he deleted the profile months ago.

“I would not authorize Gay.com like I wouldn’t authorize them to look at my bank records, or anything else electronic,” he said.

In a September interview published by RAW STORY, Gurley said he would not speak about anti-gay marriage flyers the party mailed in the South, which said liberals would ban bibles and legalize homosexual marriage. As National Field Director, he would have a hand in political mailings.

He did, however, intimate that he might not agree with some of the party’s tenets.

“I, like anyone else, have policy disagreements with any number of elected officials,” Gurley said. “I don’t expect to agree with everything that everybody says.”

He stated that he had read the 2004 Republican Party platform, approved in August.

It begins, “Ronald Reagan believed that people were basically good, and had the right to be free. He believed that bigotry and prejudice were the worst thing a person could be guilty of.”

The platform includes a bolded section titled, “Ensuring Equal Opportunities.” The section leads with the sentence, “Our nation is a land of opportunity for all, and our communities must represent the idea of equality for every citizen.”

This doesn’t, however, apply to gay Americans.

“We believe that neither federal nor state judges nor bureaucrats should force states to recognize other living arrangements as equivalent to marriage.”

“After more than two centuries of American jurisprudence , and millenia of human experience, a few judges and local authorities are presuming to change the most fundamental institution of civilization, the union of a man and a woman in marriage.”

I.
The 2004 presidential election was lost not by John Kerry over the last several months but by the Democratic Party over the last several decades. Democrats have lost control of all three branches of government for the foreseeable future. We are now a minority party.

II.
When the Senate Democratic leader is defeated while spending $16 million attempting to get the majority of 500,000 votes, the problem is not a lack of funding or effort.

III.
The failure of the Democratic Party to connect with America's desire for fulfillment is political death.

IV.
Democrats are now history's spectators, Republicans its actors.

V.
The obsession with denouncing the radical conservative project as a "lie" has become a useful substitute for vision.

VI.
Renovating Democratic politics is not a question of moving to the right or talking more about religion. It is about creating a framework that once again communicates to the core needs of the American people.

VII.
America is not now, and never was, simply "the economy, stupid." What the American people want is a deeper sense of personal meaning, a national mission, and passion in times of fear.

VIII.
Returning the Democratic Party to majority status will require a political realignment no less sweeping than that which was accomplished by conservatives over the last 40 years.

IX.
Only the breath of a serious and new moral-intellectual vision will be sufficient to resuscitate the Democratic Party.

X.
Democratic candidates will continue to lose as long as they treat Americans as rational actors who vote their "self-interest" after weighing competing offers for health care, jobs, and security.

XI.
Conservatives have spent the last 40 years getting clear about the values they represent. They have even developed a "family values" brand to represent a framework that coheres traditional prejudices around prayer in school, gun rights, restricting abortion, and restricting gay rights.

XII.
By contrast, liberal or "progressive" groups and Democrats have spent the same period of time defining themselves against conservative values, even "morality" in general.

XIII.
If resources continue to flow to the same leaders who have failed to construct a new vision and have thus left the Democratic Party in ruins then we can expect more of the same. And worse. XIV.
Those who resist the process to create a new vision will be left behind.

XV.
Candidates who intend to win should no longer hire consultants who repeatedly lose. Those who counsel caution when dealing with the indifferent, the disaffected, and the undecided do not understand American history. Consultants who advise their clients against offering a clear and compelling vision in fear that it will be attacked should find themselves without a home in the Democratic Party. The sooner they retire, the better.

XVI.
Unconnected at a values level, the Democratic Party's laundry list of policy proposals is a confusing and alienating hodgepodge of special interests bound together by a vague sense that "we're all on the same side." Such a conflation demands no critical self-examination of the interest groups whose turf, and very identities, are treated as inviolable by Party chieftains.

XVII.
The progressive vision must be a direct challenge to fundamentalism in all of its forms: political, religious and economic. It must match fundamentalism's power without replicating its authoritarianism. It must appeal to the values of liberty, equality, community, justice, unconditional love, shared prosperity, and ecological restoration, among many others.

XVIII.
Democrats serious about returning to majority status must:

  • Retire any leader who believes that we are currently on a winning path that simply needs more money and effort.
  • Define and articulate a coherent set of values of our base, and be willing to lose those allies who do not share these values.
  • Fight battles, win or lose, that define and advance our values and expand our political base.

XIX.
In despair and defeat lie the seeds of triumph and victory. In that loss lies the opportunity to define a new progressive politics for the new century.

Contacting DNC

by Jerome Armstrong

Draft Howard Dean has the mailing addresses many of the DNC members.  Also, you can check out your online state party websites for contact info that might include phone numbers and email addresses. A lot of these people are also probably listed in the phonebook.

As someone else posted, many of the 440 current DNC members will face re-election as their respective state Dem organizations reorganize this winter, in advance of DNC meeting in DC the first week of February '05, when the Chair will be selected. Further, many of the state committee persons who will vote for the re-election or new member will first face re-election within their local (county/parish/district/etc) Democratic organizations.

This is a ground game, each in their own state. Get together, figure out tactics, let's go forward.

Good Ideas

by mfeld356

First, let's start with the silver lining: Kerry's defeat was not a McGovern or Mondale-scale wipeout. Having said that, the Democrats must change course. Some will argue that fundamentally changing tactics is panicking, that Gore came really close in 2000, and that, but for an incredibly high evangelical turnout, Kerry could have won in 2004. Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that if we continue on the same path, we'll hear another 'legitimate' excuse for losing in 2008? Quite simply, more of the same is insufficient.

So what to do? Here's a program (or if you prefer, a "plan") to help get the Democratic party back on track (I also describe this and other ideas at http://mikethemadbiologist.blogspot.com):

1) Recognize that we are no longer a majority party. In the past few elections, the Democrats have acted as if all they had to do was turn out their voters, and they would win. Given the large and rock-solid evangelical Republican base in many battleground states, there will be as many or more identified Republicans. The recent Democratic strategy of playing not to lose by running out the clock assumes far more Democrats than Republicans. This won't work, because in the battleground states, we don't have a numerical advantage: in Ohio, there were more self-identified Republicans than Democrats.

Psychologically, the Democrats have to be more aggressive and try to gain ground.
If you don't think we're a minority party, consider this: most Democrats are hoping for lower evangelical participation in the next election. Hoping for low voter turnout is precisely what minority parties do. (As an aside, am I the only one who thinks that in 2008, the Republicans will successfully rally their base with school prayer ballot initiatives?) The good news is that when you're a minority (voting, not racial), you don't have much left to lose; you don't have to worry about losing this or that state because the states you do have are Democratic strongholds.

2) Stop complaining about wedge issues and start manufacturing some. This Election Night, you would have thought that we were having a formal national referendum on gay marriage. Does anyone think that the eleven ballot initiatives were spontaneous? Of course not: the Republicans saw an opportunity to fire up their base. By nationalizing the local process, the Republicans were able to inject this issue into the campaign. It's time we do the same, so here are three issues that would be agreeable to most or all Democrats:

i) Stem-cell research. It's amazing how many rank-and-file Democrats came up with this idea independently the day after the election. This has the double whammy effect of blunting and clouding the abortion issue, as well as subtly injecting the notion of nuance. The Democrats should try to get a California-style initiative on the ballot, even in states it won't likely pass. Be clever about it: call it a "Gift of Life" initiative or something.

ii) Real wage initiatives. Put the minimum wage on the ballot. Don't call it a livable or minimum wage (those sound wonky), or a fair wage ("fair" is a wimpy word). Call it a "real" wage. These passed by large majorities in Ohio and Florida. Since we're all but shut out at the national level it's time to embrace federalism.

iii) A Five-Million dollar tax (do not call it this). In states that allow it, put up referenda that create a new income bracket at five million dollars of the highest rate plus 10% (or ten percent if there's no income tax). Not only do we Democrats think it's good policy, but it takes the edge off the "limousine liberal" tag (or helps it turn it into the corporate jet conservative tag).
One thing to note: to make the initiatives work, they have to happen in multiple states at a time (Stem cell research is probably the best initial bet).

3) Fire the current political operatives. The current crop of Democratic political advisors treats the voting public as if they were Pavlov's dogs. The utter disdain for the public is apparent and makes Democrats appear elitist. It would also appear that the primary job qualification of being a Democratic advisor is the ability to remove any sense of passion or commitment from his or her candidate.

Remember when Kerry talked about Christopher Reeves? He had passion. And it was as moving as anything Clinton ever said. Certainly, after years in public life, there must have been issues that Kerry felt passionately about. Can anyone tell me what those issues are?

Fundamentally, the Democratic operative class is unable to speak (or write speeches) about issues with moral certitude. Often, an issue will be either described in wonky terms ("good policy") or invoke families in some half-assed whiny way-and let's not even consider crass cynicism. Let's take the minimum wage. How hard would it be for Democrat to say with conviction, "If you're a single parent with two kids who works 40 hours a week, 50 weeks per years, the government -[dramatic pause]-the American people will make sure that you are not officially poor. There is right and there is wrong. Supporting a real wage is right. It is just. Opposing it is wrong." Not "unfair" or "anti-family", wrong.

Most Democratic politicians seem unable to summon any righteous indignation whatsoever. I think a good deal of this stems from an utter disconnection from and inexperience with religion. They feel uncomfortable with any sort of moralizing. (Clinton actually chewed out some of his speech writers for their unfamiliarity with religious cadence.) If there were ever a Democratic speech writer school, the books of Amos, Isaiah, and Jeremiah should be front and center (I would also add Camus' Resistance, Rebellion, and Death; righteous indignation doesn't have to be doctrinaire).

Consider this: among most Democratic policy makers, moralizing is considered to be a bad and uncouth thing. But aren't morals good things?

The arrogance, alienation and disconnection of the Democratic establishment wouldn't be so bad if they actually delivered. The most frustrating thing is that I don't how to remove or influence the operatives who seem to have more influence than the politicians that they mind: there's no way to vote out the same old stale campaign advisors.

4) Regain the language. From "death taxes" to "tax relief", Democrats are getting clobbered in the language battles. We need to develop our own verbal counter-agitprop. Here's an example: refer to Republican deficits as the "Republican birth tax." Not only will it alarm people-The Republicans want to tax me for having children?"-but it also hammers home the point that your kids will have to pay for these deficits. Then point out that this is wrong and immoral.

Second, depending on the context, always call conservatives either crazed conservatives or corporate jet conservatives (or go for the twofer and call them crazed corporate jet conservatives). Repeat as needed.

Third, don't ever use the word progressive. It sounds pretentious and snooty.

  1. Respond to the Democratic rank-and-file. There's been a huge amount of thoughtful criticism, particularly on the Internet (that wacky free transmission of ideas). Many rank-and-file Democrats feel isolated from the party leadership, so they've started writing, blogging, and publishing in journals. The Democratic leadership needs to stop being so condescending and start listening to these ideas: it's not as if the leadership is winning elections. If they don't listen, get rid of the leadership.

  2. Reward those who support the party. While Anybody But Bush can get you close, you need a program to get further. If the Democratic party stopped insulting their base, not only would they get sustained fervency from the core, but they would also gain intellectual coherency (note: I'm not arguing for a shift to the left):
*Democrats support bill after bill after bill that transfers revenue from Democratic areas and programs and sends it to Republican areas and programs. We are the only political organization that rewards its opponents at the expense of its supporters.
*Stop 'Sister Souljah-ing'. Has it ever occurred to anyone that the lower turnout among younger blacks is in part because we (actually the DLC and the rest of the Nattering Nabobs of Ninniness) demonized low-income young African Americans to gain white votes. Do you ever hear Republicans criticizing their core? This is indicative of a larger problem. Think of all the issues the Democrats have run away from: voting rights, civil rights, women's rights, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and environmental protection, just to name a few. That's why I liked Kerry's convention speech, he did not say, "Civil rights? Who us? Nope, you must be thinking of someone else" as so many Democrats have in the past. We should and must be proud of these accomplishments. Then we must argue that we will go further (at the convention, Kerry's "marching" imagery was superb; yet one more potentially powerful way to define the campaign that was fumbled).

7) Get out in front of the tax issue. Democrats have been defined as the party of taxation, and whether we like it or not, we're going to have to confront this. Luckily, Bush's calls for income tax reform give Democrats opportunity to reposition ourselves:
*If it looks like Archer's national sales tax idea will pass, vote against it, but don't filibuster it. Tactically, we can beat them to death with it for years. In the long run, it allows the creation of a new, unencumbered 'means-tested' (don't call it progressive) income tax.
*If it looks like the flat tax is the favored child, get out in front of it by proposing to eliminate all deductions except for charitable contributions, the automatic deduction, and dependents. Keep it revenue neutral, and cut the 15% and 28% rates, and eliminate the alternative minimum tax (it wouldn't be needed). We have a golden opportunity to significantly lower the tax burden for those who support the Democratic party (eliminating "tax expenditures" is also good policy).

8) Figure out how the Democratic party will relate to corporate America. The alienation and anger behind cultural conservatism stems in large part from the dehumanizing effect of corporations run amok. Job loss and the health care crisis are obvious culprits, but the treatment of citizens solely as consumers and units of production is also dehumanizing. We need to clearly state, with examples from everyday life, that treating people, rich and poor alike, as economic units, and not two gay men behind closed doors, is the cause of moral crisis.

When he ran for president, Bill Bradley described the Democratic party as torn between the 900,000 who donate and the 26 million who don't. While more people are able to donate due to online fund raising, the underlying issue remains: how do Democrats relate to corporate America? My impression is that much of the Democratic and Independent vote would like a harder line and rhetoric. I'm not sure I would call this moving to the "left": how far left were William Jennings Bryan and Teddy Roosevelt?
So will these ideas work? I don't know. I do know that it's time for some new ideas.

Voting in Columbus

Bob Fitrakis

Document reveals Columbus, Ohio voters waited hours as election officials held back machines
November 16, 2004

One telling piece of evidence was entered into the record at the Saturday, November 13 public hearing on election irregularities and voter suppression held by nonpartisan voter rights organizations. Cliff Arnebeck, a Common Cause attorney, introduced into the record the Franklin County Board of Elections spreadsheet detailing the allocation of e-voting computer machines for the 2004 election. The Board of Elections’ own document records that, while voters waited in lines ranging from 2-7 hours at polling places, 68 electronic voting machines remained in storage and were never used on Election Day.

The Board of Elections document details that there are 2886 “Total Machines” in Franklin County. Twenty of them are “In Vans for Breakdowns.” The County record acknowledges 2886 were available on Election Day, November 2 and that 2798 of their machines were “placed by close of polls.” The difference between the machines “available” and those “placed” is 68. The nonpartisan Election Protection Coalition provided legal advisors and observed 58 polling places in primarily African American and poor neighborhoods in Franklin County.

An analysis of the Franklin County Board of Elections’ allocation of machines reveals a consistent pattern of providing fewer machines to the Democratic city of Columbus, with its Democratic mayor and uniformly Democratic city council, despite increased voter registration in the city. The result was an obvious disparity in machine allocations compared to the primarily Republican white affluent suburbs.

Franklin County had traditionally used a formula of one machine per 100 voters, with machine usage allowable up to 125 votes per machine. The County’s rationale is as follows: if it takes each voter five minutes to vote, 12 people an hour, 120 people in ten hours and the remaining three hours taken up moving people in and out of the voting machines.

Once a machine is recording 200 voters per machine, 100% over optimum use, the system completely breaks down. This causes long waits in long lines and potential voters leaving before casting their ballots, due to age, disability, work and family responsibilities.

A preliminary analysis by the Free Press shows six suburban polling places with 100 votes a machine or less, and only one in the city of Columbus meeting or falling under the guideline.

The legendary affluent Republican enclave of Upper Arlington has 34 precincts. No voting machines in this area cast more than 200 votes per machine. Only one, ward 6F, was over 190 votes at 194 on one machine. By contrast, 39 Columbus city polling machines had more than 200 votes per machine and 42 were over 190 votes per machine. This means 17% of Columbus’ machines were operating at 90-100% over optimum capacity while in Upper Arlington the figure was 3%.

In the Democratic stronghold of Columbus 139 of the 472 precincts had at least one and up to five fewer machine than in the 2000 presidential election. Two of Upper Arlington’s 34 precincts lost at least one machine. In the 2004 presidential election, 29% of Columbus’ precincts, despite a massive increase in voter registration and turnout, had fewer machines than in 2000. In Upper Arlington, 6% had fewer machines in 2004 One of those precincts had a 25% decline in voter registration and the other had a 1% increase. Compare that to Columbus ward 1B, where voter registration went up 27%, but two machines were taken away in the 2004 election. Or look at 23B where voter registration went up 22% and they lost two machines since the 2000 election, causing an average of 207 votes to be cast on each of the remaining machines. In the year 2000, only 97 votes were cast per machine in the precinct. Thus, in four years, the ward went from optimum usage to system failure.

Jeff Graessle, Franklin County Election Operations Division Manager, told the Citizen’s Alliance for Secure Elections (CASE) Ohio voting rights activists that Franklin County does not use a simple 100 votes per machine guideline. Rather, they allocated their machines in the 2004 election based on a new criteria determined by ACTIVE registered voters. Hence, an affluent area like Upper Arlington which has shown a consistent pattern of voters is rewarded with more machines and fewer losses. A less affluent area of Columbus where voters miss voting at more elections and may only come out in a hotly tested election, like Bush-Kerry, are punished with fewer machines.

Of course, there’s a direct correlation between affluence and votes for Bush and below medium income areas and votes for Kerry. Franklin County, Ohio’s formula served to disenfranchise disproportionately poor, minority and Democratic voters under the guise of rewarding the “likely” voter or active registered voters.
